Cost of contraception

The basic rule

Contraception is generally self-paidA diagnosis or the fact that care is provided by a doctor does not by itself establish an entitlement under compulsory health insurance (OKP). Cover must be assessed for the specific consultation, examination, medicinal product or procedure.

Prices and binding cost information

For medicines such as the pill, ring or patch, the current retail price of the selected product at the pharmacy applies. For procedures at our practice, the table below gives fixed prices or—where the product or effort must first be known—states that you will receive a binding total price before treatment.

Pill, ring, patch

The binding retail price depends on the selected product and pack size. The pharmacy price shown when the medicine is dispensed applies; when prescribing, we tell you which product has been selected. Some social services or foundations support women on low incomes—please ask us if needed.

IUD / coil

  • Mona Lisa copper coil: CHF 400 as a total price including the coil, insertion and follow-up at about 6 weeks.
  • Mirena hormonal coil: CHF 550 for insertion, CHF 600 for replacement (removal of the old coil and insertion of a new one), each including Mirena, insertion and follow-up at about 6 weeks. The replacement price may vary depending on the effort involved; we will discuss this with you beforehand.
  • Low-dose IUS: The total price depends on the selected product and is confirmed before insertion; it includes the product, insertion and follow-up at about 6 weeks.

Removing a coil costs from CHF 150, depending on the effort involved. For replacement of a copper coil or low-dose IUS, you receive a binding total price for the planned scope before the procedure. Where medically reasonable, any unforeseeable additional work is discussed with you before an additional chargeable service is provided.

Hormonal implant

Hormonal implant (contraceptive rod, active substance etonogestrel; in place for 3 years):

  • Insertion/replacement: CHF 700 (incl. implant, local anaesthetic and materials; replacement includes removal)
  • Removal: CHF 220 (incl. local anaesthetic, removal, materials and wound care)

If the implant lies deep or is hard to reach, needs ultrasound guidance, or removal takes considerably longer, the price for removal may change. We will discuss this with you beforehand.

Consultation

A consultation or examination is not automatically an OKP benefit merely because it takes place in a medical practice. The specific medical purpose and the statutory effectiveness, appropriateness and cost-effectiveness criteria are decisive. Care solely for choosing contraception may therefore be wholly or partly self-paid. Deductible and co-payment generally apply where a service is covered.

If you already know which method you prefer, we can plan the next steps directly during the consultation (prescription, insertion/removal, follow-up).

A diagnosis alone does not guarantee cover

Hormonal treatment is not automatically reimbursed in endometriosis, acne, PMS/PMDD, heavy bleeding or PCOS. For medicines, the specific product matters: it must generally be authorised for the intended use, included in the List of Pharmaceutical Specialities and used within any applicable limitation.

Use outside the authorised indication or limitation, or use of a non-listed product, can be reimbursed only case by case under the statutory exception criteria. The insurer may require prior cost approval. Material, insertion or removal of an IUD or implant must be assessed separately.

Clarify before decidingWe explain the expected costs before treatment. If insurance cover is uncertain, it should be confirmed in writing with the insurer before a prescription, order or procedure.
