Teen consultation

What is the teen consultation?

The teen consultation is a protected space for girls and young women from around age 12 — a place where you can ask questions privately without anyone immediately doing something.

At the first visit we get to know each other. We talk about your cycle, possible complaints and what's on your mind. A physical examination is not part of the first visit — unless you specifically wish.

What can I ask?

Anything, really. A few common topics:

  • My cycle is irregular — is that normal?
  • I have severe period pain
  • I'm thinking about contraception
  • I have questions about sexuality, first relationships, STI protection
  • I have concerns about my body, weight, breast development
  • I just need someone to listen

Will I be examined?

No.The first visit involves no gynaecological examination. If an examination becomes medically meaningful later, we discuss it in advance — and you decide.

Can someone come with me?

You can bring a companion — mother, sister, friend, aunt. If you'd rather come alone, that's just as fine. On request a female team member can also be present.

How confidential is this?

If you have decision-making capacity, you generally decide about your treatment and who may be informed. Medical confidentiality then also applies towards your parents. Legal exceptions may apply, for example where there is a serious immediate risk, child-protection action or a lawful request from an authority. An insurance statement may nevertheless reveal to the insured person or invoice recipient that and when medical care was provided. If billing confidentiality matters to you, please speak to us and your insurer before the appointment.

HPV vaccination

The HPV vaccine protects against the most common causes of cervical cancer and is recommended in Switzerland for girls and boys from age 11. We counsel and administer the vaccine on request.

Costs

Whether compulsory health insurance covers the teen consultation depends on its specific medical content; deductible and co-payment generally apply to a covered consultation. For HPV vaccination from age 11 to 26, the cantonal-programme criteria apply: since 1 January 2026, vaccinations under Article 12a KLV are exempt from the deductible, while the 10% co-payment remains. Costs may be self-paid outside those criteria. See the FOPH information on vaccination cover (German).
