Copper vs. hormonal
Copper IUD: hormone-free, period often somewhat heavier. 5 – 10 years. Also for emergency contraception.
Hormonal IUS: low local hormone dose — period becomes lighter or stops. 3 – 8 years depending on model.
Reliability
The IUD/IUS is among the more reliable reversible methods, with a Pearl Index of about 0.1 – 0.8 as a guide value. As with any method, no contraception is 100% effective.
Insertion
- Pre-talk + examination — exclude pregnancy & infection
- Ideally during period (cervix more open)
- Insertion via speculum, sleeve through cervical canal, deposit in uterus
- Ultrasound check immediately after insertion
Does insertion hurt?
Sensation varies — from “mild cramping” to “brief strong cramp for 15 seconds”. We offer NSAIDs 1 hour before, slow technique, optional local anaesthesia at the cervix.
Position check
Sono check 4 – 6 weeks after insertion, then annually with prevention. For complaints anytime.
Removal & change
Removal is usually brief — by string with forceps. Change can happen in the same visit. An IUD can be removed at any time — fertility usually returns quickly.
Costs
For self-pay patients, the Mona Lisa copper coil has a total price of CHF 400, including the device, insertion and follow-up at about 6 weeks. The Mirena hormonal coil costs CHF 550 for insertion and CHF 600 for replacement including removal of the old coil, each including Mirena, insertion and follow-up. The replacement price may vary depending on the effort involved; we will discuss this with you beforehand. For a low-dose IUS, the total price depends on the selected product and is confirmed before insertion; it includes the product, insertion and follow-up. Removing a coil costs from CHF 150, depending on the effort involved. A diagnosis alone does not guarantee compulsory-insurance cover. The specific product, authorised use and any limitations, as well as the material, insertion and follow-up, must be assessed separately; prior insurer approval may be required. See costs and insurance assessment.
